  • Greenhouse Production & Glasshouse Display Intern - Spring Semester- ISU - Reiman Gardens Ames - IA (United States)

    INTERNSHIP Format: The spring semester internship begins on January 27, 2025 and ends on May 16, 2025.  All interns are required to complete various internship components through the guidance of their supervisor and the internship coordinator. As such, each semester intern is required to work in their specialized area up to 20 hours per week with time reserved for educational opportunities, research, reflection, and inter-departmental rotations. 

  • Student Worker- ISU - Veterinary Medicine Clinical Pathology Ames - IA (United States)

    Clinical Pathology Student Worker

    Duties: This position consists of working Saturday's on rotating basis from 8-12 in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory and carrying the after-hours cross-match phone on a week rotating basis.

    Saturday duties consist of resulting out lab testing that was performed in the after-hours lab when the main laboratory is closed, accessioning in hospital as well as mail in patient samples and processing those samples accordingly so that the tech that is working can perform the testing that was requested on those patient samples.

  • Summer Field Assistant - July/August only- Iowa State University Doubled Haploid Facility

    Job Description:

    We are a research facility – not a commercial plant breeder. Our nursery is quite variable as it consists of many smaller individual experiments.

    During July it’s pollination time! We work every day, including weekends – isolating ears, bagging tassels, self- and cross-pollinating corn plants in the nursery, detasseling, and taking notes in yield trials.

    Gleason lab (Plant Pathology & Micro Department, ISU) is seeking 1 student for summer fieldwork, starting ASAP

     

    Work will be M-F, 40 hours/week.

    Most of the work will be at the ISU Horticulture Farm (Gilbert, IA).

    The position involves 8 hours/day of outdoor work. Main tasks involve, but are not limited to:

    -Setting up mesotunnel row covers and planting of 2 acres of organic muskmelon and acorn squash.

    -Lifting and pulling up heavy items.

    -Research data taking and transcribing.

    -Insect pests and disease monitoring.

    -Harvest, weigh, and classification of fruit (acorn squash, muskmelon, apples).

     

     

    Skills/Requirements:

     

    -Willing to work outdoors for 40 hours/week during the summer

    Data collection and field assistance for research projects related to sorghum breeding and genetics. The position involves both indoor and outdoor activities, taking measurements, recording data, controlling weeds, and making many pollinations all while following specific guidelines. The applicant will work as part of a team. This year will be mostly nursery work with all types of pollinations. Opportunities for hours in the spring and fall are also available. Average week is 30-40 hours. Questions about sorghum, plant breeding, and genetics are encouraged.

  • Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader-Iowa State University Academic Success Center

    A Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader is an undergraduate student who provides peer academic support for an assigned course. SI Leaders will assist in student learning and retention at Iowa State University through facilitation of SI sessions that help students better understand concepts and applications of course content.

    This position will require Leaders to dedicate approximately 9-12 hours per week for the academic semester, with some weeks requiring more hours for training and professional development.

    Qualifications:

    For consideration, candidates must possess the following qualifications:

    Enrollment as an Iowa State University undergraduate student

    Minimum ISU cumulative GPA: 3.00

    Minimum semester GPA for the most recent academic semester completed: 3.00

    Assist USDA Research scientists and technicians with soil microbiology and nutrient cycling research at the National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment (NLAE) located on the Iowa State University campus: https://www.ars.usda.gov/midwest-area/ames/nlae

    Work is performed in both laboratory and field settings year-round.

    Duties may include:

    -soil, plant and greenhouse gas sample and data collection from field experiments

    -assist in the implementation and sampling of lab and greenhouse experiments

  • ISU Weeds Research Assistant- Iowa State University Department of Agronomy

    The Department of Agronomy is looking for a few full-time Research Assistants to help with various integrated weed management projects during the summer of 2023. This is a great opportunity to learn about the different methods researchers are experimenting to control noxious weeds commonly found in corn and soybean fields throughout Iowa.

    Job Description:

    We are a research facility – not a commercial plant breeder. Our nursery is quite variable as it consists of many smaller individual experiments.

    We have our first peak of work in the second half of May, when we plant out ca. 60,000 corn seedlings with a transplanter and set up our irrigation system. June involves a lot of weeding, note taking, leaf sampling for DNA analysis, etc. …

    During July it’s pollination time! We work every day, including weekends – isolating ears, bagging tassels, self- and cross-pollinating corn plants in the nursery, detasseling, and taking notes in yield trials. Most of the work is normally completed by the second week of August.

  • The Gleason lab is looking for a motivated undergraduate student to give us a hand working in the lab. Our lab is currently working with plant pathogens of fruits and vegetables, and developing biocontrol assays.

    We are also preparing for the 2022 field season, fixing row cover nets that will be used in the summer to protect muskmelon and squash plants in the field.

    It is possible that if the student is interested, work can be provided through summer.

  • The Anderson Lab at ISU https://andersongenomicslab.github.io/ is hiring an undergraduate research assistant to assist on a project investigating the genetics and genomics underlying maize root phenotypes that are beneficial for nitrogen acquisition. The undergraduate student will be expected to assist with experiments seeking to identify nitrogen-responsive genes and transposable elements in a time course study and root phenotyping efforts. The undergraduate will gain experience in experimental design, plant nutrition, molecular biology techniques, and greenhouse management. Some computational work may be completed during the winter months. Compensation is $10/hr. We encourage any enthusiastic students interested in crop physiology, responses to environmental stress, or genetics/genomics to apply.
